BB answers the question; what happens if betting $2,000 on the NFL is out of my price range?
Now more than ever, we live in a world of haves and have-nots.
The Las Vegas Hilton runs a handicapping contest every year for the haves – a “Super Contest” actually. You’ve probably heard it discussed by Chad Millman or Bill Simmons. It’s the UEFA Champions League of NFL Handicapping. For the entire regular season, each contestant picks 5 NFL games against the spread per week in a true test of handicapping.
Last year, the Super Contest had roughly 400 entries at $1,500 a pop. But that’s just the cost if you happen to have a penthouse in Vegas. If you can’t personally walk into the Hilton and submit your picks, you have to pay a proxy service to put in your bets. ($400 plus 1% of your winnings.) Translation? You need $2,000 and a prayer before you can even associate with a super contest. At least, that was the case until last season.
Last year, Bankrupt Bookie decided huge prize handicapping contests shouldn’t have a more complicated entry process than Augusta National. Our contest, called MDG (the Most Dangerous Game) has an entry fee of $102.00. (The $2 is to mitigate PayPal fees – the other $100 goes directly into the prize pool.) Forget about hiring some homeless Vegas meth-head that watches a little too much Breaking Bad to run your picks up to the Hilton every Sunday. You’ll be notified through e-mail of the spreads on Wednesday, and your picks are due online on Saturday by 2:00pm. For legitimacy and full disclosure, all picks will be visible to the participants after 2:00pm on Saturday. Bankrupt Bookie takes no rake and has no influence.
Gone are the guys who tell you about their wins every week without mentioning the losses. Gone are the guys who claim their annual 16 team parlay put them through college. Your wins are tracked, your results are ranked, and your weekly picks are there for each contestant to behold. (After they’ve already made their picks, of course.) It’s a 17 week dogfight that will have you pacing the kitchen on Thanksgiving and frantically texting your friends after the first field goal on Week 17. The cost is akin to a night out drinking but the reward is massive for a $100 bet, with the champion taking 40% of the entire pot.
Anyone can be a handicapping genius when there’s no accountability; MDG participants prove their genius while battling for a massive financial reward. Vegas can have their club for degenerate locals and snobby aristocrats – we have-nots will have MDG and every Sunday we will be living and dying by the bounce of that egg shaped leather ball. We might not have a lot. But at least, come this fall, we’ll have that. Use the link below to sign up.
